Once upon a time, in a dense forest near a river, lived a clever monkey and a cunning crocodile. The monkey lived on a tall tree by the riverbank, while the crocodile dwelled in the water. Despite their contrasting natures, the monkey and the crocodile had become good friends, meeting every day to share stories and enjoy each other's company.
One hot summer day,
As the monkey swung from branch to branch, he noticed the crocodile floating nearby. The crocodile called out to his friend, "Dear monkey, the fruits on the other side of the river are the most delicious I've ever tasted.
The monkey,
Always eager to please his friend, agreed to help. However, he realized that he couldn't swim across the river. Nevertheless, he came up with a plan. "Crocodile, I will happily give you the fruits, but I cannot reach them on my own. If you could carry me on your back and swim across, I will gather the fruits for you," suggested the monkey.
The crocodile,
Tempted by the thought of delicious fruits, agreed to the monkey's plan. He swam to the riverbank, and the monkey hopped onto his scaly back. As they began their journey, the crocodile warned the monkey, "Remember, monkey, don't play any tricks or else I might drown you."
The monkey assured him that he would be loyal and honest. As they reached the other side of the river,
The monkey started gathering the ripest and juiciest fruits from the trees. Meanwhile, the crocodile eagerly watched and imagined the delightful taste of the fruits.
The monkey kept filling his hands and arms with fruits until he couldn't carry any more. He then had an idea. "Crocodile, my friend, these fruits are too precious to be wasted. I want to give them as a gift to the king of the jungle. I'm sure he will reward us generously. Could you take me back across the river?"
The crocodile's eyes gleamed at the prospect of a grand reward. He agreed to take the monkey back, unaware of the monkey's true intentions. As they swam towards the riverbank, the crocodile's excitement grew, oblivious to the cleverness of his friend.
When they were halfway across the river, the monkey spoke up,
"Oh dear friend, I apologize, but I made a mistake. The king of the jungle resides on the island in the middle of the river, not on this side. We must turn back."
The crocodile, now growing suspicious, stopped swimming and asked, "Is that so, monkey? Are you trying to deceive me?"
The monkey, with a calm smile, replied, "Deceive you? Why would I? You are my dearest friend. I merely made an error. Please, let us go back and complete our noble mission."
Reluctantly, the crocodile turned around, swimming back towards the middle of the river. However, as they reached the deep water, the monkey quickly climbed onto the overhanging branches of a tree, well out of the crocodile's reach.
